Alabama

Alabama has no statewide statute authorizing or mandating county civilian oversight of sheriffs, and no Alabama county has established such a body. Alabama's 67 sheriffs are constitutional officers under Ala. Const. Art. V § 137. The Alabama Legislature has been consistently hostile to police oversight reform; post-2020 sessions focused on expanding sheriff authority, not constraining it.
