Discussed at Board of Supervisors · 2020-06-23

On June 23, 2020, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution declaring racism a public health crisis — the first county in California to do so. The resolution directed staff to form an Equity Element Group and committed the Board to collaborating with law-and-justice agencies and the community to 'identify mechanisms for researching and addressing public concerns related to law enforcement performance,' including the Sheriff's Department. No subsequent AB 1185 ordinance or inspector general proposal followed, and the Board has not separately voted on a civilian sheriff oversight body.
