Orleans Parish has no independent civilian oversight body for its Sheriff's Office. Louisiana's sheriff is a constitutional officer, elected parish-wide for a four-year term under La. Const. Art. V, § 27, which also makes the sheriff the parish's chief law enforcement officer, executor of court orders and process, and collector of state and parish ad valorem taxes and other license fees, except that the same section excludes Orleans Parish from the chief-law-enforcement-officer designation. No Louisiana statute establishes parish-level civilian oversight of a sheriff's office.
