Maine
Maine's 16 counties have constitutional sheriffs (Me. Const. Art. IX § 1) who exercise general law-enforcement authority. The Maine Criminal Justice Academy Board of Trustees is the statewide officer-certification body and as of 2024 may decertify for non-criminal unprofessional conduct, but no Maine county has created a civilian board with explicit jurisdiction over the county sheriff's office.
