Colfax County has no independent civilian oversight body for its Sheriff's Office. New Mexico's sheriff is a constitutional officer, elected to a four-year term in every county under Art. X, Sec. 2 of the New Mexico Constitution. Los Alamos County, the state's sole incorporated county under Art. X, Sec. 5, is a structural exception: its sheriff remains elected, but the County Council reassigned nearly all law-enforcement duties to the Los Alamos Police Department in 2016. No statewide statute requires county-level civilian oversight of a sheriff's office.
