State context

South Dakota's 66 sheriffs are statutory county officers under South Dakota Codified Laws (SDCL) ch. 7-12, which sets the sheriff's duty to preserve the peace and apprehend felons, maintain an office at the county seat, attend the courts and county commission, and comply with Attorney General directives. The chapter also authorizes the county commission to fix compensation for deputies, jailers, and clerks, reimbursed from the county general fund. This is a full general-law-enforcement county office, not a civil-process-only role.

South Dakota has no statewide statute establishing civilian oversight of sheriffs, and no county-level oversight body has been identified in any of the state's 66 counties. NACOLE lists no South Dakota entries.

Two of South Dakota's 66 counties are coterminous with tribal reservations: Oglala Lakota County with the Pine Ridge Reservation (Oglala Sioux Tribe), and Todd County with the Rosebud Reservation (Sicangu Oyate). Tribal and Bureau of Indian Affairs police provide primary day-to-day law enforcement on both reservations. The Oglala Lakota County Sheriff's Office is administered from Hot Springs, in neighboring Fall River County; the Todd County Sheriff's Office is based in Mission, within Todd County.
