Grand Isle County has no independent civilian oversight body for its Sheriff's Office. Vermont has no statewide statute establishing civilian oversight of sheriffs; S.75, which would have authorized municipalities to create such boards, stalled in Senate Government Operations in 2023 and was not enacted. The Grand Isle County Sheriff is a constitutional officer under Vt. Const. Ch. II, § 50, elected to a four-year term, whose department handles civil process, prisoner transport, and contract patrol under 24 V.S.A. § 290.
