A note on data vintages and definitions. Population is the US Census Bureau's 2018-2022 American Community Survey 5-year estimate, loaded for all 72 counties (5,882,128 total). Sheriff staffing comes from the US Census Bureau's 2022 Census of Governments Employment survey (March reference period); headcount equals full-time plus part-time positions across function codes 062 (sworn law enforcement), 162 (civilian law enforcement), and 005 (corrections). This is a March snapshot rather than a full annual budget figure, and it has been loaded for all 72 counties. Jail capacity has not been loaded. Wisconsin's Department of Corrections Office of Detention Facilities inspects every county jail against the state jail standards under Wisconsin Statutes section 301.37, but per-facility rated capacity is not published as a single downloadable dataset we have loaded, so the jail column shows a dash for every county. Sheriff department budget data has not been loaded, so the budget column shows a dash. Sheriff names were collected from each county's own official sheriff's office site, because Wisconsin has no public statewide sheriff directory, and machine-verified against those sources in July 2026. All 72 counties are named. One county, Buffalo, had an interim officeholder at verification, after the prior sheriff resigned in 2026, pending a gubernatorial appointment.
