A note on data vintages and definitions. Population is the US Census Bureau's 2018-2022 American Community Survey 5-year estimate. Sheriff staffing comes from the US Census Bureau's Census of Governments - Employment 2022 (March reference period); headcount equals full-time plus part-time positions across function codes 062 (sworn law enforcement), 162 (civilian law enforcement), and 005 (corrections). The Census publishes no true full-time-equivalent figures, and the March payroll snapshot is not directly comparable to a full annual operating budget. County jail data has not yet been loaded for Kansas, so the jail column shows "—" for every county. No Kansas state agency inspects or sets standards for county jails comparable to a body like the Texas Commission on Jail Standards; the Kansas Department of Corrections operates only state prison facilities, and county jails instead receive an annual life-safety inspection from the State Fire Marshal's office rather than a comprehensive jail-standards review. The only systematic facility-level source covering Kansas county jails is the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics Annual Survey of Jails. Sheriff department budget data has not yet been loaded for Kansas. Sheriff names were collected from the Kansas Sheriffs' Association member directory and machine-verified against county sources in July 2026. Riley County's listing shows Brian Peete, the appointed Director of the Riley County Police Department, rather than an elected sheriff; Riley County abolished its sheriff's office in 1974 and consolidated law enforcement under RCPD, an exemption now written into the Kansas Constitution.
