A note on data vintages and definitions. Population is the US Census Bureau's 2018-2022 American Community Survey 5-year estimate, loaded for all 115 jurisdictions; the total is 6,154,422. Sheriff staffing is not currently loaded for Missouri, so the staffing columns show a dash throughout this table. They previously carried the US Census Bureau's Census of Governments Employment 2022 figure, which counts a county government's police protection and corrections employment by function code rather than by agency. That total includes the county probation department, the coroner and the crime lab, and it excludes the sheriff's own court services staff, so it does not describe a sheriff's office. Staffing will return here when a county-published figure is loaded. St. Louis County, St. Charles County, and the City of St. Louis are policed by a separate county police department or city police force, so a county-wide law enforcement count would not describe the sheriff's office in those three jurisdictions. Jail capacity has not been loaded. Missouri has no state agency that inspects or sets standards for county jails, and no statewide per-facility capacity dataset exists, so the jail column shows a dash for every jurisdiction. Sheriff department budget data has not been loaded; the budget column shows a dash. Sheriff names were collected from the Missouri Department of Public Safety's "County Sheriff's Offices" open dataset (data.mo.gov), last updated January 2025, which lists a named sheriff for each of the 114 counties and the City of St. Louis. For the City of St. Louis, where the elected sheriff was removed from office in December 2025, the current interim officeholder was researched from a 2026 source instead of the dataset. All 115 jurisdictions are named, and the names were machine-verified against the dataset in July 2026.
