The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Citizen Review Board (1997) is Nevada's only civilian police oversight body and the functional county-level sheriff oversight board — LVMPD is a consolidated city-county agency in Clark County, and the elected Clark County Sheriff heads the department and runs the county jail. Outside Clark, Washoe County (Reno) has only internal review and no external civilian body exists.

State context

Nevada Revised Statutes § 289.387 authorizes, but does not mandate, local advisory review boards. Clark County is the only Nevada county to have created one with subpoena authority and civilian-majority composition.

Nevada's sheriffs are elected county officers under NRS 248.010, chosen by the qualified electors of each county for a four-year term. The state comprises 16 counties plus Carson City, an independent consolidated municipality (a county-equivalent formed in 1969 by the merger of the former Ormsby County and the city of Carson City), each electing its own sheriff, 17 offices in total. Clark County's sheriff heads the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, a merged agency created under the NRS 280 metropolitan police framework; NRS 280.121 keeps the elected county sheriff, rather than an appointee, as the department's chief law enforcement officer. As of the July 2026 harvest, Eureka County's officeholder is listed Sheriff-Acting rather than as an elected incumbent in the Nevada Association of Counties directory.
